I’m no stranger to the fact that there are harsh chemicals in just about every conventional hygiene product on the market.  I was aware that the chemicals in our everyday household items mess up our bodies endocrine system.  Knowing these facts has helped me create my own personal care items.  I like that I know what is going into my products and it is much cheaper!

I’ve always wanted to create my own hair products because I have two daughters, and I don’t want to use harsh chemicals on their hair.  We were using Shea Moisture (which is a non-toxic hair and body brand) but it started to get expensive!   I knew there had to be a way to get the same fabulous results at half the price and with even better ingredients.  Here is how I created my own DIY Curly Hair Products (Natural and Non-Toxic).

DIY Curly Hair Products (Natural and Non-Toxic)

For this DIY I wanted to create a whole line of DIY curly hair products, which include a spray detangler/leave-in conditioner, cream leave in hair lotion, and a curl defining gel.diy curly hair products

You can get most of these ingredients at Whole Foods Market or a health food store.  Since everyone’s hair is different I’m not giving exact measurements just ratios.  My daughter and I need different ratio’s of ingredients because we have two different hair types.  I’ll give suggestions of ratios on each recipe depending on your hair type. You can get the containers here.

Cream Leave-In Hair Lotion

1 parts Shea Butter (lessen this ratio if you have fine hair.  This was too much shea butter for my daughter because she has fine hair.  However, it was perfect for me because I have coarse hair).

1 parts Coconut Oil

1/2 Part Aloe Vera Gel

2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil

I melted the shea butter and coconut oil in a warm water (I created a double boiler).  Once melted I gently stirred them together. Once the mixture cooled I added the aloe vera gel and olive oil.  Then I mixed again, then poured it into a bottle.

Spray Detangler/Leave-In Conditioner

Fill 3/4 of  bottle with Aloe Vera Juice

Then fill the rest of the bottle with the  Oil of your choice. I chose Olive Oil again.  However, you can use avocado oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil.

Then do 4-5 drops of your favorite essential oil

(make sure to refrigerate this mixture)

Curl Defining Hair Gel

1/4 Cups of Whole Flax Seeds

2-3 tablespoons of Jamaican Black Castor Oil or Regular Castor Oil

1-2 Tablespoons of Honey (I kept adding until my mixture was the desired tackiness. I like a strong hold. Omit if you don’t want extra hold).

Marshmellow Root (1-2 Tablespoons for soft hold 3-4 Table Spoons for Stronger Hold.  Omit if you want a light hold).

2 Cups Distilled Water

5-6 drops of Essential oil of choice

Boil Flax Seed and marshmallow root in distilled water until it starts to thickens. Once it thickens add honey.  Stir everything together.  Once it is mixed place a brand new panty hose sock or cheese cloth over a bowl.  Pour flax seed mixture into hose/cheese cloth and let cool. Once the mixture has cooled, start to strain the mixture through your hose/cheese cloth. It will take some work but the gel will start to come out.  Keep pushing the mixture until no more gel comes out. This is when I added my castor oil and essential oils.
