I soon discovered that toxic people have a tendency to cast their emotions on you. That is exactly what I was going through. So my next hurdle was trying to figure out how to deal with this. For starters, I continued to read my Bible daily and journal my thoughts and feelings. Then I started reading a very interesting book that basically said that we are co-creators along with God. Our thoughts CREATE REALITY. TO THINK IS TO CREATE.
I had an Oprah “Ah-Ha” moment. Though I couldn’t change my surroundings, I could change the way I viewed them. “Okay great”, I thought, “I’ll do that”. It was during this time that my husband approached me about meditating together.
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law, he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
Why We Are Meditating Together
One night after a long day, my husband and I started to discuss some goals that we wanted to accomplish. We already knew that we needed to be on the same wavelength when it came to accomplishing our goals. My husband suggested we meditate together. I’ll be honest in saying, I wasn’t too excited about that. I’ve always found meditating to be pointless, and my mind always wondered. However, since I was in a desperate situation I gave it a try.
How We Meditated Together
My husband told me to meet him downstairs in the living room at 5:30 am. I didn’t like getting up that early, but I gave it a go anyways. Though the time wasn’t my cup of tea, I wasn’t going to turn down alone time with my husband!
The first morning I eagerly went downstairs. I was actually excited to try meditating with him. When I sat on the floor I asked him what did he meditate about. And he said that he usually meditated on his favorite Bible verse. I nodded my head. He turned on soft soothing music and we closed our eyes and began to meditate.
What Happened When I Started Meditating
When I closed my eyes, my mind immediately started praying. It was as if I had all of these built up issues that released themselves in the form of prayer. I started reciting some of my favorite Bible verses over and over again, and it was all flowing like a river. Meditating wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be.
The time passed swiftly, and the 5 minutes we meditated felt more like one. I felt refreshed when it was all over.
We only missed one morning of meditating because I was up all night with my 1-year-old. During our week of meditating together I felt:
- more connected to my husband
- had more patience with my kids
- handled tough situations better
- didn’t let my toxic people affect me as much
- viewed life in a more positive manner
- felt less stressed
- worried less
- trusted God more
- took control over my thoughts
- focused on my future goals more
- started engaging in my new hobbies
- responded to my husband in a more positive manner during disagreements
- despite being sick, I had energy and felt good
If you get a chance to, please meditate with your spouse. I really feel that it does help. We decided after this week that would continue to meditate together.
