While browsing the interwebs last week, I came across an interesting sleep aid. The author called it Sleep Dust. I read the ingredients and it only contained three ingredients: brown sugar, pink Himalayan salt, and honey. While I don’t have trouble sleeping, my husband does. I decided to make it and give it a try to see if the claims were true. I was also excited because I just purchased a bottle of Pink Himalayan Salt, and wanted to use it.
The benefits of Pink Himalayan Salt is really impressive it:
- Creates an electrolyte balance
- Increases hydration
- Regulate water content both inside and outside of cells
- Balance pH (alkaline/acidity) and help to reduce acid reflux
- Prevent muscle cramping
- Aid in proper metabolism functioning
- Strengthen bones
- Lower blood pressure
- Help the intestines absorb nutrients
- Prevent goiters
- Improve circulation
- Dissolve and eliminate sediment to remove toxins
How Does It Help Us Sleep?
It is said that Himalayan Salt helps increase oxytocin levels which help us relax before going to sleep. Himalayan Salt also reduces your bodies stress response, therefore, it is easier to get a better nights rest.
The natural sugar found in honey raises our insulin slightly and allows tryptophan, the compound famous for making us sleepy after eating turkey at Thanksgiving, to enter our brains more easily. Taking a spoonful of honey before bed can help you get restful sleep. Source
So Does it Work?
I was a bit skeptical of the claims, but I gave it a try anyway. The mixture is very easy to make. Just take some honey and himalayan salt mix. Take a couple of grains for salt (if you have the larger grains) and place it under your tongue. Let it dissolve, and wait for the magic to happen.
Before bed, my husband and I both put the grains under our tongue. The taste was not pleasant! But we were determined to give it a fair chance. About 20 minutes after taking mine I was ready to nod off to dream land. My husband fell asleep shortly after me.
The next day I felt kind of sluggish. I’m not sure if it was from this mixture. My husband said he felt great the next day. We tried again the next night, and the same thing happened. And again the next morning I felt sluggish and he felt fine.
I decided to give the mixture a break, because while it did help me fall asleep I didn’t like how I felt the next day. However, my husband did not experience this. So I believe that this mixture is great for someone who has a hard time falling asleep. But if you don’t have those problems, it is probably best to stay away from it.
